AFTERBURN EFFIGY: THE BURNING CUBE

Hey there all you PHantastic PHreaks, this is Bird with a short blog on the effigy for the first annual AFTERBURN in Lakeland, FL. The Idea for the “Burning Cube” was the brain child of Chris from Washington. Some of you might have met him at Soupstock last year; he is a friend of Deb silly. Anyway, he was in the Panhandle at the Bickford house for New Years last. Deb, Donna, Chris, my bro, Doug, and I got together for a NY party and of course had to BURN something. So after much brain storming, lots of beer, and just plain PHun, the first Burning Cube was built. We put 6 pallets together to form a cube, attached 2X6 legs to it to form a tripod, and stood it up. We now had this pallet cube about 10 feet in the air that we then preceded to stuff with fireworks, more wood, anything combustible. About dark thirty, fire was introduced and the games began. Much debate, lots more beer and test runs, even building a scale model brings us to the new and improved version. We added length to the legs and changed the angle, to put the cube even higher. Then for artistic flair and more fuel, the flaming plywood was added and a few other things up our sleeve for effect. So what we have is roughly a 5 foot square flaming cube, 16 feet in the air. Doug and I are stoked to be able to offer this art for others to enjoy. When we were told it was to be the center piece, my first thought was WOW what an honor, then all I can say, in my best newbie burner voice… Sweet, now BURN IT!

The fire keepers camp is a melting pot of fire performers and artists from around the USA. We will provide the best area for fire performace. This year we invite all drummers to our camp to drum to the roar of the flames.

THE CHURCH OF THE IMMACULATE CONSUMPTION
Spiritual enlightenment for all, in convenient bloody mary form. Worship with us each morning and pay tribute to the tomato, the pickle, and the light beer chaser. Because breakfast is the most important drink of the day! Go forth and spread the word and your cup shall runneth over.

A BURNING DESIRE
I am asking for everyone who comes to bring one burnable object. I, and we, can then take these objects and attach them to free form burn structure. This now breeds creativity because we all have no idea what everybody brings and we will be amazed at how it turns out to look. Also, this causes greater passion and desire because everyone is now burning something they brought. A Burning Desire.

HUKKA LOUNGE
Come to the Hookah Lounge and enjoy our flavored tobaccos. Our Moroccan style lounge serves up shisha filtered through juice and water every night. The plush seating, soft carpeting, and great people make this the ultimate AfterBurn chill-out zone. If you have a favorite molasses based tobacco, you are welcome to bring it and share with others.

FIERY BITCHES
The Fiery Bitches are a collection of artists, pyronauts, and beer enthusiasts from the heart of the south, Atlanta. Drop by our camp for chill ambient space, a frothy cold beverage, and good folks.

KINETIC BURNING ART
This art piece will consist of 3 large heads, about 5’ tall, on a rotating base. The heads are designed to burn “skin” off and are constructed of metal.

AFTERGLOW LOUNGE

NOUN:
1. The atmospheric glow that remains for a short time after sunset.
2. A lingering impression of past glory or success.
3. An impression or feeling, usually a pleasant one, that remains when the experience, etc that caused it is over.
4. A sense of fulfillment, completeness, and general well being that one feels after the effects of a psychoactive drug have faded, which can last from anywhere between one hour, and several days.
5. The feeling of contentment after ‘great-sex.’
Whatever your definition of Afterglow, when you’re ready to ‘chill’, find your way through the fog to the Afterglow Lounge…Comfy Pillows, Black Lights, Blinky Lights, Black Light Reflective Art…and impromptu popcorn and hot chocolate! Come feel the Afterglow!

EPIDERMIS ENHANCEMENT EXHIBIT
The Epidermis Enhancement Exhibit, presented thanks to a generous grant from Looburderm Lotion Company, studies the earth-bound humanoids’ rituals for non-survival related hide modifications, including the practices of “body painting” and “henna”. Throughout the day technicians will be on hand to demonstrate the various enhancements commonly found on the species pyro-homo sapiens and Participants are encouraged to engage in these rituals. In addition, the EEE requests that all Participants pet and feed the live specimens on display at the exhibit.

THE GIVING TREE LOUNGE (under the fallen tree)
As we all know, people can be divided into two groups: Givers and Takers. At different times in our lives, everyone is either one or the other. At The Giving Tree Lounge, now is your chance to explore the inner peace of being a Giver, and the outer peace of being a Taker. Upon entry, you will be randomly given either a T or a G armband. This will let others know where you stand for that time. Simple rules: Takers can’t give, Givers can’t take. You can always trade your status; however, you will be publicly reprimanded in the lounge if we see a Taker giving, or a Giver taking. We are watching… “There will be none of that, there, and definitely none of this, here.” Also, per our theme, we ask folks to bring items to give away to the Takers only, and we ask for the Takers to be goddamn appreciative for once!!!! (and when they are Givers, to return in-kind) If you are looking to *give* a performance, this is the place. If you want to *take* a break, this is the place too. This bar is also a gift bar, which means, for those who are unfamiliar with this kind of bar, you give to get (booze). Bringing in a bottle to donate makes you a VIP Giver and Taker. Also, bringing your own cup will *give* you special rewards, which you can *take* or *give* away. The two main drinks are: “Cirrhosis of the Giver” and “Taker’s Tea”.

AfterBurn is an experiment in temporary community where everyone is not just invited, but required to participate. We hope you get to make the most of your experience with us, and help add to the experience of others. While you are welcome to express yourself freely, we do have some rules to help keep everything more safe and comfortable for everyone. Here’s a quick run-down of the basics to get you started:

Anyone under the age of 18 MUST be accompanied by their parent.

No food/water/shade/shelter, no entry. Not kidding here either.
No ins/outs.
No Littering. LEAVE NO TRACE. Pack it in, pack it OUT!
No trash in the port-o-potties.
No Vending. This is a gift economy.
No Spectators. PARTICIPATE! Volunteer!
Observe the Laws of the Land.
Observe the Fire Rules.
Respect your fellow human.
YOU VOLUNTARILY ASSUME THE RISK OF SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH BY ATTENDING AFTERBURN.
You must read our Survival Guide in its entirety before attending. Much of what’s in the survival guide is common sense, and the rest is real useful advice, but you’ve got to read it all before you arrive. You may also want to check out our Supplies List, which outlines some basic necessities you will need for the event.

Information for the media, photographers, etc.
AfterBurn is a private event and media may not use pictures, images or recordings of participants or their art without their consent. There are no “media passes” to AfterBurn. Anyone wishing to enter must buy a ticket.

At all times ASK for permission to take pictures, if you plan on publishing on the internet, you must get written permission from the subject of the photo or footage… while they are completely sober.
Commercial use of images taken at AfterBurn is prohibited without prior consent of AfterBurn organizers.

Cars will be anchored for the duration of the event.
This means, that once you park your car, it ain’t goin nowhere. This means, BRING EVERYTHING YOU NEED for the time you will be at AfterBurn. There are no “daily trips into town”.

Fires will only be allowed in designated areas.
This ain’t the desert, folks. We’re somebody’s personal property with plenty of highly combustible trees and grass, and other organics. PLEASE respect the fire areas. If you’ve got something you wanna burn, please contact Riz: themecamps@aol.com.

Possession, sale, and/or consumption of illegal drugs is a violation of federal law.
